Cedarville, Ohio - Nearly 30 teams composed of Cedarville University freshman engineering students will showcase their boat design skills on Cedar Lake in the Elmer W. Engstrom Department of Engineering's annual canoe competition October 12. Small teams of students will design and build canoes entirely of posterboard-like paper and plastic tape. Beginning at 3 p.m., each canoe will be launched from one end of Cedar Lake and paddled by two of its designers in a race to cross the lake in the shortest time. An additional phase of the competition is new this year. According to Dr. Larry Zavodney, chairman of the engineering department, "The top 12 teams to successfully navigate the width of Cedar Lake will square off in a demolition derby. The last team with their canoe floating will be declared 'Kings/Queens of the Lake,'" he added. The crowd-pleasing event is free and open to the public.
