Haydn's "The Creation" to Be Performed at Cedarville University

by Public Relations Office

Cedarville, Ohio—THE CREATION, by Joseph Haydn, will be this year`s featured performance at the annual Cedarville University Choral Masterworks Concert. This monumental oratorio will be presented Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in the Jeremiah Chapel of the Dixon Ministry Center on the Cedarville campus. After hearing Handel`s MESSIAH, Haydn was inspired to compose THE CREATION based upon the Book of Genesis and Milton`s "Paradise Lost." Soloists sing the roles of the archangels Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael as well as Adam and Eve. The dramatic and lyric qualities of THE CREATION made it an immediate success at its first performance in 1798, and these qualities have ensured the continuation of its popularity to the present day. THE CREATION will be performed by the Cedarville University Orchestra conducted by James Braid; a mass choir of 200 singers from the concert chorale, women`s choir, Jubilate, and the men`s glee club; faculty soloists Beth Cram Porter and Mark Spencer; and guest soloist David Stevens from Austin, Texas. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited. For more information, call the department of music at 937-766-7728. -30-
