Cedarville, Ohio-Middle school students from schools across the Miami Valley will compete in the local level competition of MATHCOUNTS at Cedarville University on Saturday, Feb. 12. The activities begin at 8 a.m. in the Engineering, Nursing, Science Center on the Cedarville campus. MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement. According to the MATHCOUNTS Web site at, participating schools coach their students in math for several months and then select students to compete in "one of more than 500 competitions held nationwide and in U.S. schools overseas." The Web site also noted, "The first competitions are held at the local level in February with winners progressing to state competitions in March. Results at the state level determine the top four individuals and top coach who earn the honor of representing their team at the national finals, where ESPN has broadcast the event for the past two years. At all levels, MATHCOUNTS challenges students` math skills, develops their self-confidence, and rewards them for their achievements." Since MATHCOUNTS began in 1983, more than 6 million students and coaches have taken part. MATHCOUNTS has received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. The Miami Valley competition is sponsored by the Dayton chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers.
