Cedarville, Ohio-Cedarville University senior Sarah Bayne likes to say she has "adopted" a ministry of working with foster children. And now the Montgomery County Mentoring Collaborative has "adopted" Sarah Bayne as one of their 2006 Outstanding One-to-One Mentors. She is the first college student to ever receive this honor. Bayne leads a Cedarville University community ministry team called "Fostering Friendships," which volunteers with the AGAPE for Youth (www.agapeforyouth.com) family foster care agency in Dayton. For the past three years, Fostering Friendships has worked with AGAPE, under Bayne's leadership, to link students with families that need mentors for their foster children. In addition to handling the administrative duties of her position, Bayne mentors a 15-year-old. This commitment involves helping the teen with homework, going out to eat, and talking about education and career aspirations. "Some weeks it's like a full-time job, but I love it!" she exclaimed. "What we found to be so exceptional about Sarah was not only her commitment to her mentee, but her willingness to lend her leadership and energy to assisting in the development of AGAPE's exceptional program," shared Sue Koverman of the Mentoring Collaborative. "She is truly an asset to the organization, the University, and the community." The experience has been inspiring for Bayne. A political science major from Clay, N.Y., she hopes to become an advocate for children, possibly focusing on orphans and those who have limited health care options. Bayne's Fostering Friendships team is just one of a myriad of Cedarville University volunteer groups which serve throughout the Miami Valley each year. In fact, the University has a department of community ministries dedicated to coordinating student involvement in ministries ranging from nursing home and jail visitation to tutoring and teaching English. Last year nearly 800 students (nearly 25 percent of the student body) participated in a community ministry activity.
