Blogging is in, and Cedarville University President Dr. Bill Brown is into blogging.

“Bill's blog is great! He's got just the right bloggy touch - informal, authentic, and an interesting glimpse into the thinking of a university president.” That's what Debbie Weil, a corporate blogging consultant and author of the soon to be released The Corporate Blogging Book says about Cedarville University President Bill Brown. Until learning about Brown's Xanga site, Weil said that she knew of no other university in the nation where the president was writing his or her own blog. She has since added it to her list of favorite CEO and senior executive weblogs.

A blog (or weblog) is a Web site where diary-left-open-style entries are posted on a regular basis and displayed with the newest at the top. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and related media. Since its appearance in 1995, blogging has emerged as a popular means of communication, affecting public opinion and mass media around the world. Blogs are often posted by hosting services like Xanga, the service Brown uses.

Brown started blogging in response to students who urged him to get involved. “A student set up the Xanga site, showed up at my office, and said, 'It's all set. Now you do the rest!'” explained Brown. “Since then I've been faithfully blogging once or twice a week.”

Blogging allows Brown to communicate with a wide audience, on and off campus. On his site he shares his personal news - like details about his daughter's recent trip to Kenya - and keeps readers informed of events happening at Cedarville. He also uses his blog to share his thoughts on current trends or news topics, like The DaVinci Code and the Gospel of Judas. “My blog is not about me, but about a lot of the things I am thinking about and working on,” he noted.

Brown's blend of insights and opinions mixed with personal glimpses into his daily life often results in interesting replies from readers - which he appreciates as that feedback has allowed him to garner good information and insightful comments. “I frequently ask for feedback and am pleased to hear from people all over the world,” he shared. “I've received responses that are almost 100 percent encouraging because the content I focus on is intended to be informative, thought-provoking, and, frequently, inspirational.” Brown also enjoys the more personal feedback, adding, “I like knowing that people are interested in what I do and how my family is doing. Even my mother in Florida reads it to find out where I am!”

While some might find the candidness of blogging uncomfortable, its open style is something Brown says he enjoys. “Xanga is very casual, and I tend to be pretty casual as well. Admittedly, my site is different from almost all the other sites because I am older and (hopefully) more mature. The key is the content,” he said.
