Going and Making Disciples

Dr. David Stevens defines “missions” as “meeting people at their point of need.” As the keynote speaker for the 2007 Missions Conference, he urged students to use their education and professional talents to boldly go wherever God calls them in that pursuit.

Previously a medical missionary in Africa, Stevens now serves as executive director of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, the nation’s largest faith-based organization of doctors. In chapel, he shared stories of his work in Africa and used one of his conversations with a U.S. soldier in Somalia as an illustration of how to “Be on God’s A-Team.”

Joining Stevens as speakers during the conference were the executive director of Muslim ministries for the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism; Dr. Ray Hutchison, east central regional director for Serving in Mission (www.simusa.org); and Dr. Phil Renicks, vice president of the international ministries department for the Association of Christian School International (www.acsi.org). Approximately 70 missionaries, representing 40 different agencies, were a part of conference.

Stevens concluded the conference with the exhortation: “God is going to call you to some wild places, and the only way you’ll be able to do it is that He’s there. Go well prepared and bold because God is with you.” Hundreds of students made indications that they are open to going wherever God calls them.
