Cedarville Grads Take a Swing at Success

If getting that first job right after graduation was a baseball game, then two recent Cedarville University sport management grads have each hit one out of the park.

Heading north to Wisconsin we find John Hummitzsch ’07, who is currently an account executive for the Milwaukee Wave, four-time champions of the Major Indoor Soccer League. After completing four internships with various sports teams, Hummitzsch accepted the position with the Wave shortly after graduation. His job entails many tasks, including overseeing a school program that involves 19,000 area students and managing the team’s interns.

Hummitzsch is also excited to be in charge of the Wave’s Faith and Family promotion night, a duty assigned to him after the managers learned about his Christian background.

“My mission field is the sports industry,” says the Waukesha, Wisconsin, native. “God placed a passion in my heart to work in sports, and I love everything I have been a part of.”

Hummitzsch credits his time at Cedarville for helping to prepare him for his new job. “Dr. Geist and the rest of the sport management professors provided me with real-life experiences and situations,” he says. “I learned the value of hard work, being part of a team, and not settling for mediocrity.”

He believes that God is already using him in his daily work with the Wave. “Being the only Christian in the office is a little hard sometimes,” he admits. “But I have made some great friendships with my coworkers, and my prayer is for God to use me as a positive example and a light shining in the darkness.”

As for his future, Hummitzsch plans to pursue graduate work, possibly a degree in sports law. Someday, he also hopes to open a recreation center as an outreach ministry for young people.

From Wisconsin we travel to the East Coast, where Richard “Skip” Russell ’07 has accepted the position of customer account manager with the Staten Island Yankees minor league baseball team. Russell has a wide variety of duties with the team, but his main focus is on customer service, making up to 100 calls per day to current, former, and potential season ticket holders. After completing an internship with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, a class AAA minor league team, he moved on to the Staten Island Yankees, part of the New York-Penn League, a “short season class A” league that is owned by Mandalay Sports Entertainment.

“Many people don’t realize how beneficial and significant Cedarville’s relationship with the Dayton Dragons [and Mandalay] is,” Russell says. “I learned so much from our event planning and sports marketing classes because of the partnership.”

He’s thankful to his former professors for pushing him to be successful. “I had dreams, and they taught me that with God’s help I could achieve anything.” Russell also recognizes the importance of being a light for Christ in the sports industry. “My actions are huge here since it is a secular environment,” he explains. “I have chosen to be honest and encouraging and to let my speech be edifying.”

Hummitzsch and Russell represent just two of the many Cedarville sport management graduates who have landed great jobs in this exciting and fast-paced industry.
