Cedarville, Ohio- Cedarville University hosted the 22nd Annual Ohio Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference this past spring semester. Sponsored by a consortium of Ohio colleges and universities, the annual event provides a platform for undergraduate students in Ohio to present their original research in a public forum. More than 100 participants from 14 Ohio universities attended the event, hearing 81 students present their research.

One of only a few conferences focused on undergraduate research, this prestigious conference allows talented students to prepare for professional work in the field, as well as network with peers and professors. Eight senior psychology students from Cedarville participated in the conference, delivering their capstone senior research projects.

“The conference provided a cogent enhancement to the seniors’ learning opportunities,” says Dr. Michael Firmin, chair of the psychology department. “The presenters were able to share their research in a milieu where their own scholarship was sharpened.” Cedarville seniors deepened their understanding of the research process and also received feedback on their projects from the attendees.

More than 45 Cedarville psychology graduates have been accepted into doctoral programs in the last 10 years. Students have identified opportunities to participate in research conferences such as OUPRC and close faculty mentoring as significant positive contributors to this overall success.

“I participated in the conference to gain experience in presenting my research and in critiquing others’ research,” says Bonnie Brady, a participant in the conference. “My thorough preparation for the conference made me confident in my presentation.”

This April was the second time Cedarville hosted the conference. “Our involvement communicates to Ohio institutions that the scholarship generated by Cedarville’s psychology majors is on par with research conducted by undergraduate students across the state,” says Firmin. “Cedarville’s overall academic reputation is enhanced as other universities understand we make significant contributions to academia. Cedarville’s psychology department is pleased to take a leading role in this regard among Ohio institutions.”
