New Partnership Gives Pharmacy Students Practical Experiences

by Public Relations

Cedarville’s pharmacy professors keep themselves busy. Training students and serving the community is their passion, and it motivates them in a way that no amount of caffeine could.

Melody Hartzler, Pharm.D., recently began working with the Cassano Health Center to set up a clinical training site for Cedarville’s pharmacy students. Currently, the clinic, an extension of Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, serves as a training facility for family practice medical residents from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Hartzler is also providing diabetes education and working with physicians to ensure medications are used effectively and appropriately for each patient who comes through the clinic’s doors.

The pharmacy faculty at Cedarville partnered with the clinic primarily for its mission. The center specializes in family medicine and is committed to providing excellent care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. In an attempt to reach a wider demographic — and be of better service to the community — the center also staffs a full-time Spanish interpreter, the only health care facility of its kind in the area to do so.

“We want to train up future professionals to reach out to the under-served community,” says Cedarville University School of Pharmacy Dean Marc Sweeney, Pharm.D. “This collaboration will provide an innovative practice setting. It also affords an opportunity to develop a team approach to providing health care.”

Pharmacists working in collaboration with physicians, a relatively recent development in health care, is important for the management of chronic diseases. Studies have shown that such collaborations can decrease health care costs while improving the quality of care.
