The Dayton Gems professional hockey team will start training for this year’s season during the first week of October, and Cedarville University student Niles Rosner will be working right alongside them.
Rosner, a junior athletic training major, is the first student to work with a professional team in order to complete his clinical rotation hours for the athletic training major at Cedarville. He will work with the team throughout their season, which ends in April, and will have the opportunity to travel to some of the team’s away games.
As part of their program requirements, athletic training students must complete clinical rotations at various locations, including high schools, clinics and university campuses. The athletic training program currently works with several facilities, including Cedar Cliff High School, Central State University, Wittenberg University and Excel Sports Medicine. The Dayton Gems will be the first professional team to partner with Cedarville’s athletic training program.
So what will a typical day look like for an athletic training intern with a professional team? Rosner will arrive for pre-game set up around 2 p.m. to help with pre-game treatments. He will then work the bench with the Gems’ certified athletic trainer and assist the team physician during and after the game. Rosner will also have the opportunity to experience preparation and work on the road.
“This is a great rotation because I get to work with a professional sports team,” says Rosner. “It’s exciting to be the first, and I hope we can keep this rotation for future students.”
Cedarville’s athletic training program is not the only one to benefit from this new relationship with the Dayton Gems. The hockey team is working with the university as a whole to potentially recruit students to serve in an equipment manager internship. They are also interested in the sports management program.
Steve Patterson, athletic training education program director, says that the program leaders want to gain as many opportunities as possible for students. “It really follows our mission statement,” he says, “to advance opportunities through diverse learning experiences. We want to give those who are interested in working with pro sports the experience and the exposure.”
