Competing to Win

Cedarville University offers numerous majors that appeal to a diverse student body. But whether you choose English, engineering, pharmacy, philosophy or education, each major has something in common: each integrates biblical principles.

Developed out of the desire for a Christian influence in the sports world, sport management is a combination of finance, marketing, and specific sport management courses.

“Very few Christian colleges have put an emphasis in this area, and we wanted to develop the best Christian sport management program possible,” says Ben Belleman, assistant professor of exercise and sport science at Cedarville. “The sports world in our culture has a huge influence, so we need Christians who are making a difference in this area.”

In addition to coursework, students complete a minimum of three 30-hour practical experiences and a summer internship. Students also work with Cedarville’s athletic department, area high schools, recreational organizations, as well as professional franchises such as the Dayton Dragons and the Dayton Gems.

“The moment I heard about the sport management program at Cedarville, I knew it was the only place for me,” says Jeremy Auyer, a 2009 graduate who currently serves as the general manager for the Charlotte Eagles. “I was able to not only come away with conceptual knowledge of what it means to work in sports, but more importantly, I gained hands-on experience through practicums, my internship, and through Cedarville’s Sport Management Organization. The professors have the knowledge and contacts in the industry to help you find the perfect job after graduation.”

Recent graduates have slipped into a variety of positions with many high schools, organizations and sports teams, such as the Indiana Pacers, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Milwaukee Bucks. And it’s no surprise. With their training and professionalism, sport management graduates are changing their industry.

“Cedarville’s sport management students and faculty have been fantastic to work with over the years,” says Clint Taylor, senior marketing manager for the Dayton Dragons. “The annual Cedarville Baseball Classic held at Fifth Third Field has evolved into a significant event that keeps growing every year. We expect anything we host at Fifth Third Field to be first class, and the annual Cedarville Classic certainly meets those criteria thanks to the sport management students.”
