Two Cedarville students recently had essays published in professionally recognized journals. The essays were by Cora Gray, junior English major and honor student, and Grace Campbell, sophomore technical and professional communication major and written for Advanced Composition, taught by Kevin Heath, Ph.D., chair of the Department of English, Literature and Modern Languages.
The nonfiction essay entitled “Danaus Plexippus: The Monarch King” by Gray compared “a close friendship I had with my elementary school librarian to the brief life of a butterfly.” After receiving editing advice from classmates and Heath, Gray submitted it to the online journal Halfway Down the Stairs. “Dr. Heath encouraged all of us to submit one of the three essays that he assigned us, and he thoroughly walked us through the submission process of researching different publishing houses and responding to various editors’ replies to submissions.”
Campbell’s essay, titled “Aftershocks,” was about her spiritual struggles after returning from a Haitian mission trip the day before the island nation’s catastrophic earthquake in 2010. Her essay was published, with the print journal Relief.
“Getting published has made me more confident in my writing ability and more willing to submit my writing other places,” Campbell said. “Being published is also a great addition to my resume.”
