Cedarville University’s Department of Business Administration (DBA) has launched a brand new course for incoming freshmen and transfer business students. Business Profession is an introduction to the business major, featuring professors who will highlight the different disciplines and functions of the University’s six business–related majors.
Until this point, business majors did not learn about their chosen discipline until their junior year, but the new course will allow them to understand what each area is like so they can develop a solid career plan. This taste of the business program is intended to encourage and inform students as they make better decisions about the careers they will pursue. The course also allows students to meet and interact with most of the professors in the business program while learning about various areas of expertise early in their Cedarville experience.
By the end of the course, each student will have a better understanding of the business profession and will have written a personal career plan based on the Career Direct test as well as a personality test. The plan will include the student’s reasons for being in the profession and a mission statement.
Another aspect of the course that Jeffery Fawcett, D.B.A., professor of marketing, is particularly excited about is the DBA Business Plan Challenge. This project extends over the semester and challenges teams of students, paired with a senior student consultant, to create a business plan based on a hypothetical scenario. Teams will then present their plans to a panel of local business leaders. Fawcett describes the project as sort of initiation into the business department—similar to Cedarville’s famous engineering program ritual. “We’re hoping it becomes the business equivalent of the cardboard canoe race,” he laughs. “Except no one gets wet.”
