Pharmacy School Achieves Accreditation Milestone

by Public Relations

Cedarville University is celebrating the approval of its first advanced professional degree, the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.), having recently received final approval from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and approval from the Ohio Board of Regents. These represent two of the three accreditation approvals required for the program.

The third approval, professional accreditation, is a 5-year process with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

“The early positive feedback from all three accreditation agencies suggests that a strong foundation has been created for the program,” said  Marc Sweeney, R.Ph., Pharm.D., dean of the school of pharmacy. “The next steps for the team will be working through professional accreditation with ACPE, continued faculty and student recruitment, expansion of our research and medical missions’ initiatives and growth of our existing network of training sites throughout the region. With a strong faculty and staff leadership in place, over 200 pharmacists committed to providing training to our students and multiple companies working with us to provide faculty and students research opportunities, significant momentum is underway.”

The University has offered a successful pre-pharmacy program for more than 40 years, sending students to earn their pharmacy degrees at the other pharmacy schools in Ohio and across the nation. Responding to the need for pharmacists as well as the opportunity to provide a distinct education through a Christ-centered curriculum, the University’s trustees commissioned the establishment of a full pharmacy program in January 2007. Since then plans have progressed to include hiring a founding dean, recruiting faculty members, enrolling more than 100 new pre-pharmacy students, and constructing a new health sciences center scheduled to open in the summer of 2012.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University attracts 3,200 undergraduate, graduate, and online students to more than 100 areas of study. Cedarville is a Christ-centered learning community recognized nationally for rigorous academic programs, strong graduation and retention rates, accredited professional and health science offerings, and leading student satisfaction ratings.
