In early June, a team of three senior computer engineering majors from Cedarville University stood nearby as their latest lawn mower creation cut a swath through a carefully outlined field.
For their senior design project, Brandon Brown, Miles McGee and Krista Ray constructed an autonomous robot lawn mower to compete in the 7th annual ION (Institute of Navigation) Robotic Lawn Mower Competition in Beavercreek, Ohio. This was the University’s first year competing in the dynamic division of the competition, meaning a more complicated course and the ability to avoid a moving obstacle. Through a series of sensors and webcams connected to an onboard laptop, the mower was able to maneuver through a course outlined in white paint, around a flower bed and along a fence, all while avoiding a remote control dog.
The three computer engineering majors worked on the project all year, building early and testing throughout spring semester. “Being able to work with a team long term is something that I already see I will need to be doing,” says team member Miles McGee, “All of our projects are inter-related and we have to possess the necessary skills to set aside differences and work together.”
The team placed second in the dynamic competition receiving an $8,000 cash reward. Other schools at the competition included Auburn University, Michigan Technological University and Wright State University amongst others from across the nation.
The Elmer W. Engstrom Department of Engineering and Computer Science encourages students to gain real-world experience through team development and application of their studies using projects and competitions. Often these endeavors require additional funding and material from outside sources.
