The Cedarville University chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) recently created a new award in honor of the organization’s first advisor, Travis L. (Lew) Gibbs. The Lew Gibbs Award is given once per semester to outstanding SIFE members who demonstrate an extraordinary amount of dedication and commitment to the organization.
To qualify for the award, a student must participate in at least 15 hours of organization work and display great creativity and ingenuity. The qualifying student is likely to have led a project for the organization and would have successfully managed both the students involved as well as communication with cooperating groups in order to complete the project in the professional world.
Once per semester, the SIFE officers will choose the honoree to receive the award: a plaque accompanied by the honor of being mentioned in all presentations of the organization, including at competitions against other SIFE organizations across the country.
“The award was given for the first time last spring to John Funtik for his incredible leadership in the project The Rock,” said Alexia Mervine, a junior double major in accounting and marketing and the current SIFE president. “This project allows a team of SIFE members to go to inner city Springfield and teach kids valuable life skills such as building a resume, interviewing for a job and responding to various situations in an ethical manner. The award will be given again to a different student at the end of this semester.”
SIFE is a student business organization, giving students the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise. While many of the members of SIFE are business majors, the organization is open to anyone and encourages students of any major to join.
