Cedarville University welcomes Lisa Clifton, J.D., to the faculty of the department of social work. Clifton will be serving as assistant professor of social work.
Clifton received her bachelor’s degree in social work at Morehead State University and then received her master’s degree in social work at the University of Kentucky. She worked for nearly 10 years before applying to the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University where she earned her doctorate. After law school, she practiced in workers’ compensation defense before returning to social work as the director of community services for the Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission.
Clifton finds her experience in law and social work particularly valuable since the two professions often overlap. She hopes to create a class that combines law and social work, which would seamlessly blend the disciplines. She currently teaches classes that place students in real-world social work settings. She oversees junior-level field experience in which students participate in a poverty-focused social service agency. Through this rigorous experience, the students can put what they have learned into practice.
Clifton has a heart for helping others and feels that social work is the perfect profession for her. She has worked as a hospice social worker and in school settings, including administering a federal grant for low-income, first generation students in inner-city Cincinnati. She loves interacting with students on a regular basis, so she decided to pursue higher education.
“I was thrilled with the idea of teaching social work,” said Clifton, “and not only being able to share my faith with students but to truly integrate faith into the classroom.”
