Soup for the Soul

Sometimes, all it takes to draw attention to an important issue is a little creativity ... and a bowl of soup.

Recently, Cedarville University’s Women of Vision chapter sponsored Soup for the Soul, a benefit event designed to raise awareness and give students a way to get involved with pressing global concerns. Members of the community and the University family donated soup, and attendees had the option of purchasing a seat for $6 or an eight-person table for $40. All proceeds from this year’s event went to purchase mosquito nets to combat malaria in at-risk communities in Africa.

“Malaria is a preventable disease that kills more than 2,000 people a day,” says Katie Foster, a political science major who serves as the president of Cedarville’s chapter. “Actions such as purchasing and donating mosquito nets can curb that number.”

To ensure the money gets to where it needs to go, the organization partnered with World Vision, a national humanitarian organization. “World Vision has an established campaign against malaria, so it was easy to partner with them to promote the cause,” says Karyn Straw, a sophomore public administration and political science double major. “They provided information and literature to educate us about the disease and what they are doing to combat it.”

The Soup for the Soul event was born out of a desire to share Christ’s love and make a difference in the world. “As Christians, events like this align with our responsibility to help those in need by changing our perspective and teaching us about real issues that people are dealing with all over the world,” adds Straw. “We hope this event encouraged those who attended to look for ways they can make a real difference in someone else’s life — not just for an unknown villager in Africa who will receive a net, but also for someone in the local community who may have equally urgent needs.”
