Three states. Three peaks. 24 hours.

by Patrick Noonan

I love a challenge. That's one of the many reasons why I'm soon moving to Riga, Latvia, to help pioneer a new student ministry of The Navigators there. And my love for a challenge is what helped lead me to the idea of hiking the tallest mountains in three New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) as a means of raising funds and awareness for this exciting new ministry.

Organizing and completing a hike that spanned three states, more than 23 miles of trails, an 11,000 foot elevation gain, and almost 400 miles of driving (in less than 24 hours) was a major undertaking, but even that pales in comparison to the challenge involved in reaching Latvia with the Gospel.

Latvia has seen its population shrink and its unemployment skyrocket in the wake of the economic recession, resulting in a country almost devoid of hope. God has blessed me with many friends in this small, little-known country, and it’s my desire to share more of His hope with them in the very near future.

The education I received at Cedarville has been incredibly valuable, but the single greatest blessing from my time at Cedarville has proven to be the friends I made there. One of my best friends, David Williams '04, hiked all three mountains with me, and many other friends from my time at Cedarville supported us with their prayers and financial gifts. I wouldn't have been able to do this hike, let alone start a new ministry in Latvia, without them!

Please keep me in your prayers as I aim to move to Riga in February.
