Cedars Wins Awards

by Public Relations

Cedars, the Cedarville University student newspaper, underwent major changes with the addition of the journalism major in 2008. Since that time, the paper has switched academic departments, gained all new leadership, and changed from a traditional newspaper to a magazine-style format.

The extensive changes have provided many challenges for the staff of the student paper, but their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. This year, Jeff Gilbert, assistant professor of journalism and faculty advisor for Cedars, entered the first full year of the new format into the Ohio Newspaper Association’s (ONA) annual collegiate newspaper contest. The paper came away with five awards.

“I knew we had won some awards, so I was excited to see how we had placed,” said Emily Severance, senior journalism major and managing editor of Cedars. “The staff has worked so hard the past few years and has pretty much had to rebuild the paper from the ground up.”

Gilbert, Severance and Rachel Stephens, senior journalism major and assistant managing editor of visuals for Cedars, attended the ONA convention on February 9. Of the five awards Cedars received, two were first place and three were second place. The first place awards were in design and photojournalism, and the second place awards were for arts and entertainment coverage, sports coverage and headline writing.

“The awards mean a lot to us because it was one of the first times we've gotten feedback from industry professionals,” said Severance. “We've worked really hard to make a good product that people want to read, and it feels good to be recognized for our efforts. We've thought through some of the feedback they gave us and are making improvements based on that feedback. We're just going to keep working hard to continue to make Cedars the best it can be.”
