Cedarville and Central State Universities are joining to host the National Urban Education Conference “Passion, Power and Performance, Now” on Jan. 23, 2013. The conference will prepare educational professionals for the challenges of teaching in urban environments.
Dr. Crystal A. Kuykendall, founder and president of Kreative & Innovative Resources for Kids and founder of the Merchants of Hope Institute, will serve as the keynote speaker. David Taylor, principal of The Dayton Early College Academy and a graduate of Cedarville University, will also speak at the conference.
Throughout the conference, attendees will have the opportunity to experience any of the 35 seminars focused on urban education research from local and national schools and universities.
Dr. Tim Heaton, professor of education at Cedarville University, calls urban schools uncharted territory for many college graduates. He encourages students to view the urban education environment with a fresh perspective. “As one urban principal stated, ‘When you come into my building, you need to put your middle class values aside.’ This certainly doesn’t mean our Christian values, but it does mean we need to view the urban culture through a new lens,” Heaton said.
This year’s eighth annual conference will be held at Cedarville University and continues a strong relationship with the Central State University education department. Heaton said, “We love our relationship with Central State and their education department and look forward to more opportunities.”
