Cedarville University’s Centennial Library is working to promote the University through its DigitalCommons Project, a venture that will preserve and showcase faculty, staff, and student intellectual output. Greg Martin, collection services librarian and interim director of the DigitalCommons project said the DigitalCommons is an institutional digital repository. These are tools that will allow Cedarville to manage, publish and allow access to the University’s significant intellectual output.
“The purpose of DigitalCommons is to collect, preserve and give access to the scholarly and creative works of the University,” Martin said. Works published will include papers, journal articles, theses and dissertations, books, video and audio works, and artistic and musical compositions.
The DigitalCommons project will enable faculty, staff, and students to share their scholarly work in an efficient, attractive manner and expand their professional networking. All University members and the public will be able to access the scholarly and creative work found on the website.
In 2012, the departments of psychology, music, Bible and education as well as the school of business administration joined DigitalCommons. The Music History Journal was also published electronically for the first time in 2012.
The DigitalCommons project is designed to increase Cedarville’s reputation for academic excellence as part of the University’s strategic Vision 2020 plan. “One of the most important things is that we really see this as a way to be seen nationally and globally. DigitalCommons will allow us to become one of the most influential Christ-centered institutions in the world,” Martin said.
