Cedarville University’s forensics team has had a successful start to the 2012-2013 tournament season, winning first place in the small school division in two tournaments in October 2012.
The team competed in the John G. Fee Invitational on Oct. 19 and the Curtis Brown Tournament on Oct. 20 at Berea College in Berea, Ky. Cedarville won first place at both events in the small school division, which includes schools with an enrollment of 8,000 students or less. Fourteen schools including Bowling Green State University, Tennessee Tech University, Grove City College, Murray State University, Owensboro Community and Technical College and the University of Kentucky also competed in the events.
Each of the team’s members also won individual awards at both tournaments including first place awards in impromptu speaking and prose interpretation by Alex Gonzalez, a senior middle childhood education major; in informative speaking and impromptu speaking by Laura Smith, a senior international studies and Spanish major; in after dinner speaking by Sarah Howland, a freshman business management major; and in extemporaneous speaking by Ashley Moore, a junior Spanish and history and political science major.
The forensics team is comprised of 10 students who come from various fields of study, as noted above. Derrick Green, forensics coach and assistant professor of communications at the University, said that the speech team gives students unique ways to make an impact.
“Being a part of the speech team gives students the opportunity to represent the testimony of Christ in intercollegiate speech competitions,” Green said. “It gives students the opportunity to interact with other students who do not share their faith.”
The team will also be competing at The Ohio State University’s Holiday Frolic Nov. 30–Dec. 1.
