A mock presidential debate will be held on Monday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dixon Ministry Center Recital Hall. The event is sponsored by the history and government department.
Four students will debate nine political issues: healthcare, abortion, immigration, same-sex marriage, taxes, entitlements, foreign policy and national defense, economic policy and relations with Middle Eastern countries.
Lauren April and Amber Strickland will speak as Ann Romney and Michelle Obama, presenting their husbands’ views on domestic issues. John Whitcomb and Caleb Nissley will speak as Paul Ryan and Joe Biden, presenting the candidates’ positions on foreign policy.
Thirteen students have been preparing for the debate as part of the campaigns and elections course. Assistant professor of political science Jewerl Maxwell said he gave the students different responsibilities depending on their areas of study and intended careers. In addition to the four speakers, eight students have been researching the candidates’ policies, and one will moderate the debate along with Maxwell. The speakers have been preparing responses based on the students’ research, but they will not know the questions before the debate.
Strickland, a senior communications student from Virginia, said the debate offers the students an opportunity to think critically and gain understanding of the important issues as they strive to represent the candidates’ positions with integrity.
In addition to helping these students develop practical skills, Maxwell said the event will give attendees a valuable experience.
“I think it will be just as helpful, if not more, for others on campus,” he said. “We know there’s a lot of apathy among young people, and it will be very informative.”
Tickets to the debate are free and open to the public, but online registration is required due to limited space.
