Psychology Major Recognized at Research Conference

Carolyn Case, a senior psychology major from Oakwood Village, Ohio, received an honorable mention for her research project presented at the Ohio Psychological Association Conference (OPA) in Columbus, Ohio, last month.

The Ohio Psychological Convention is an annual, three-day event that attracts speakers, psychologists, award winners and guests. The conference schedule offers attendees opportunities to network, continue their education, attend academic-related events, hear guest speakers and participate in workshops and student research poster presentations.

Case’s project, titled “Eating Disorder Characteristics Among High School Athletes in Leanness Sports,” explores if athletes in lean sports are more at risk for eating disorders than athletes in non-lean sports.

Under the guidance of her faculty sponsor Amanda Burger, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, Case conducted research for her project last spring. Case said working alongside Burger allowed her to discover skills and abilities related to conducting and presenting research that she did not know she had.

“It’s rewarding to walk away with the ability to conduct and present your research as an undergraduate student. It makes you a good candidate for graduate school,” Case said.

Milt Becknell, Ph.D., dean of the department of psychology and professor of psychology, said research experience is invaluable when applying to graduate school. “This kind of research experience should be included on a graduate school application in addition to good grades, a good score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and letters of recommendation,” said Becknell.

Case plans to continue using her research abilities when she attends graduate school for a degree in clinical psychology or counseling at Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio, after she graduates from Cedarville this May.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University attracts 3,400 undergraduate, graduate and online students to more than 100 areas of study.
