Brown to Address Graduates at 117th Commencement

by Jenni Hodges, Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University president William E. Brown will speak at commencement on May 4. Nearly 650 graduate and undergraduate students will receive their diplomas on this day, and the ceremony will be Brown’s last as president. “It is a wonderful opportunity to speak one last time to the class of 2013,” Brown said. “They are a special group of young men and women.”

Brown said his address, “Looking Back While Facing Forward,” will focus on how the past years have served as a foundation for where the University is heading.

Brown, president since 2003, will represent Cedarville as chancellor next year. During his tenure, the University added many new programs and completed the Center for Biblical and Theological Studies and Health Sciences Center. Enrollment, scholarship aid and student satisfaction have also increased under Brown’s leadership, and the University has been ranked among the top Midwest universities by U.S. News & World Report, Forbes and the Princeton Review.

Senior Kirsten Setzkorn, a history student from Troy, Ohio, said she looks forward to hearing Brown’s address. “Having Dr. Brown as our commencement speaker will be a great way for us to reflect on our years at Cedarville,” Setzkorn said.

Sheila Talbott of Lancaster, Pa., who will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, said she is also excited that Brown will be the commencement speaker. “I think it will be really special,” Talbott said, “because it’s somebody who knows us.”

Setzkorn and Talbott said they will remember Brown for his personal involvement with students, love of Scripture and genuine humility.

On May 2, the University will celebrate Brown’s years of service at 7:30 p.m. in the Dixon Ministry Center Jeremiah Chapel. This event is free and open to the public, and doors open at 7 p.m.
