Psychology Students present at National Conference

Cedarville University made a significant splash at the Ohio Psychological Association’s annual convention on November 1, 2013 in Columbus. Of the 33 undergraduate presentations, Cedarville students accounted for seven of the exhibits.

Along with the students, Dr. Di Wu, assistant professor of psychology, and Dr. Milton Becknell, professor of psychology, both judged presentations at the conference. Becknell shared that he received many compliments regarding the quantity and quality of studies Cedarville students presented.

“The convention provides students with the opportunity to make professional connections that have the potential to lead to internships, jobs and graduate programs,” said Becknell. “It was a great experience for them and I heard many positive comments about their presentations and professionalism. They represented the University very well.”

Cedarville’s psychology department emphasizes research participation because it helps students learn how to think critically. Becknell shared, “This is an essential skill for all areas of psychology – many would say a foundational principle of the profession.”

In collaboration with Dr. Luke Tse, associate professor of psychology and chair of the department of psychology, Natasha Kreft, a senior psychology major from Cedarville, Ohio, presented on the Resilience in the Hybrid Culture of the Military Reserves. Tse and Kreft’s study was awarded an honorable mention at the conference.

Their project focused on the unique psychological challenges facing men and women in the military reserves. According to Becknell, “The discussion surrounding this topic, especially with regard to post-traumatic stress disorder, has recently become more visible, and her topic resonated with the judges.”
