Reaching Inner City Youth Through Theater

by Emily Finlay, Public Relations Writer

A Cedarville University alumna is using her training and experience in theater to reach inner-city students.

Kristin Troyer, a 2012 theater graduate, has been serving a one-year internship with Inner-City Movement since June. The ministry is located in Upper Darby, Pa., and aims to help students in the spiritual and cultural difficulties they encounter by training over 7,000 youths in theater. Students aged 4-14 attend the program, where they receive a year of biblical and theatrical training. After that, students are encouraged to remain involved in the ministry through various opportunities.

Troyer said she learned about the ministry through a class assignment in her junior year that required her to research a job she would be interested in pursuing after graduation. Having been interested in working with inner-city missions since high school, Troyer contacted the ministry after graduation and, within two weeks, decided to begin serving with them. She has been involved with writing the curriculum for this year’s four semesters of training, working directly with the students and will soon be assisting in writing plays for Inner-City Movement’s upcoming season.

Troyer said Cedarville was essential in equipping her for her work in theater. “Everything I studied, all the hands-on experience,” she said, “I’m using all of it.”

The biblical training she received through the required Bible minor also played a role in preparing her and has helped her reach the students she works with. “I’m thankful for my solid biblical foundation,” she said. “It helps me answer the tough questions from students.”

Troyer said she plans to complete her internship with Inner-City Movement and hopes to use the skills and experience she has gathered to start a similar ministry elsewhere.
