Social Work Student Receives Community Service Scholarship

Emilie Delgado, a freshman social work major, received the Community Service Scholarship for Multicultural Students from Private Colleges & Universities magazine.

The magazine annually awards this one-time scholarship to a rising college freshman for exemplary community service. To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must have a multicultural background and have served in their communities with selfless motives.

Delgado did all that and more. She was part of a school club named ACTS (A Call to Serve), spending three years as a member and her senior year as president. The club volunteered at local nonprofits and raised money during the school year for a nonprofit selected each year by the student body.

In addition, she founded and ran a vacation Bible school in her neighborhood for children without transportation to similar church programs. Delgado also volunteered at her school, church and other organizations.

When Delgado applied for the scholarship her senior year of high school, she was unsure about her college major and future career path. But as she wrote the essay for the scholarship application, she began to realize her passion for helping people. “Applying for the scholarship guided me toward a major,” she said.

Delgado began her freshman year at Cedarville as a social work major. She sees social work and her desire to serve going hand-in-hand.

Delgado has gone on many missions trips including two in African countries. With a passion for African people, she plans to spend a semester in Uganda during her time at Cedarville. In the future Delgado hopes to continue to serve in the community and work with nonprofits.
