Student Spends Summer Giving Back

by Beth Ford, Assistant Director of Public Relations

A Cedarville University student is using her summer internship to make a difference in her hometown of Plano, Texas.

Leslie Lopez, a social work major, is working as an employment services case worker for Irving Cares, an organization committed to providing services to local residence in need.  The services include financial assistance for rent, mortgage, utilities and prescriptions. A food pantry is also available, as well as an employment services program and transportation to medical appointments.

“As a case manager intern and as a Christ follower, I can be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ and do what I can to encourage the people, love them, and provide for their needs,” said Lopez.

Lopez helps provide leadership at weekly job search seminars, hosted by Irving Cares.  Men and women of all ages are taught how to make a resume, how to interview well, and are presented with job leads in the area. In addition to this responsibility, Lopez helps provide educational assistance and helps men and women achieve their goals

Every summer, ExxonMobil chooses 30 college students to participate in its summer jobs program. Through this initiative college students are able to earn an exemplary, eight-week, paid internship at local nonprofit agencies. In addition to their internship responsibilities, students receive professional development and opportunities to serve their community.

“My internship this summer has made me more aware of the needs in my community,” said Lopez, “Cedarville's social work department has prepared me well for my internship at Irving Cares, and I am excited to continue learning and gaining more experiences during my senior year.”
