Family Literacy Night Hosted by CU

by Victoria Stearns, Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University will host the ninth annual Family Literacy Night at Cedar Cliff Elementary School on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This event is open to all families of students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Cedar Cliff.

Two education professors from Cedarville, Dr. Margaret Grigorenko and Dr. Ruth Sylvester, along with 31 students from Cedarville University will host the night alongside literary specialist at Cedar Cliff, Lisa Clark. A representative from the Greene County Public Library will also attend with a station that will provide books, family learning activities and a take-home packet filled with literacy-related items.
Cedarville’s professors selected the theme for the event, and university students will prepare stations where parents and their children can interact through literacy. The activities focus on empowering parents to engage with their children and suggest ways that families can be active in literacy beyond the school setting. Cedarville University students will also distribute books to students at the event, providing free literacy resources, compliments of Half Price Books and Scholastic Books programs.
“We recognize that children’s first and best teachers are their parents. As future educators, this encourages teacher-candidates to develop habits of utilizing the resources of families to partner with educators for students' success. As families are given resources and encouraged to engage in literacy, the entire community benefits,” said Grigorenko.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University is an accredited, Christ-centered, Baptist institution with an enrollment of 3,620 undergraduate, graduate and online students in more than 100 areas of study. Founded in 1887, Cedarville is recognized nationally for its authentic Christian community, rigorous academic programs, strong graduation and retention rates, accredited professional and health science offerings and leading student satisfaction ratings.
