Family Ties Lead Students to Criminal Justice Program

by Ryan Bower, Assistant Director of Public Relations

A number of factors influence a college student’s choice to enter a particular field of study. When identifying a major, many consider things such as availability of jobs in the field, earning potential or simply what their passion is.

For two Cedarville University students, the decision came down to family. In recent interviews with, juniors Ethan Raby (Springfield, Ohio) and Rebecca Rarick (Fort Wayne, Ind.) discussed their decisions to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

“Several of my family members are in law enforcement, and they encouraged me to pursue it as a career,” said Rarick. “I have always wanted a job that is active and allows me to help people, but also allows me to be analytic and investigative.”

Raby’s decision also came down to helping people, though his desire was born out of a personal tragedy that changed his life.

“I lost both of my parents due to illegal narcotics,” he said. “I want to work in narcotics enforcement because I want to help prevent other families from going through the pain I experienced as a child.”

While their personal reasons for pursuing a career in criminal justice are different, both chose Cedarville for similar reasons.

“Cedarville stood out from the crowd because of its Christian foundation, rigorous academics and the importance it places on getting students prepared for the workforce or graduate school,” said Raby.

“I picked Cedarville because it gave me the most opportunities and is a Christ-centered community,” said Rarick. “The professors in the program have a lot of experience in the field and are teaching from experience rather than from a textbook, which I really appreciate.”

Both students also told that the key to future success in the field was making professional connections and gaining experience through internships. The entirety of each interview can be read at the links below:
