Cedarville University Ranked No. 22 by Washington Monthly

by Xander Eliopulos, Public Relations Writer

Washington Monthly’s annual list of 100 best baccalaureate colleges was released in its September/October issue, with Cedarville University ranked No. 22 in the nation. This ranking also puts Cedarville as the highest-ranked university in Ohio.

Six schools from Ohio made the list. Following Cedarville University were Wilberforce University (No. 25), Ohio Northern University (No. 36), University of Mount Union (No. 42), Defiance College (No. 47) and Central State University (No. 51).

Washington Monthly is a publication based out of Washington, D.C., covering government, politics, culture and the media. The national college rankings are based on three criteria: social mobility, research and service.

Cedarville received high marks in social mobility, which takes into account the percentage of Pell Grant recipients, net price of attendance and predicted graduation rate. The university’s graduation rate of 71 percent was the fifth-highest of any school on the list. It also earned a 10th-highest score for the number of bachelor’s degree recipients who go on to earn a doctoral degree. Cedarville’s ROTC program was ranked No. 7.

Roscoe Smith, associate vice president for university admissions, acknowledged the high ranking and emphasized Cedarville University’s values in the process.

"Given their criteria, I am especially delighted that Washington Monthly ranked Cedarville among the best universities in the nation,” said Smith. “Their emphasis on serving low income students, producing quality scholarship and encouraging students to serve others are values consistent with Cedarville University’s mission as a faith-based institution."

This is the second time in the past month that Cedarville University has been recognized by a national publication. U.S. News and World Report placed Cedarville at No. 9 in its 2015-16 Midwest regional college rankings earlier this month.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University is an accredited, Christ-centered, Baptist institution with an enrollment of 3,711 undergraduate, graduate and online students in more than 100 areas of study. Founded in 1887, Cedarville is recognized nationally for its authentic Christian community, rigorous academic programs, strong graduation and retention rates, accredited professional and health science offerings and leading student satisfaction ratings.
