Four-Year Bible Reading Program Begins

by Xander Eliopulos, Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University recently instituted a new Bible reading plan for freshmen that will take them through the Bible in four years. The plan encourages students to build a daily time of Scripture reading into their life.

Cedarville students have many opportunities to get into the Word of God. They read quickly and intensely often for their Bible minor classes. However, the new program emphasizes a slow reading of Scripture, allowing time for reflecting on individual chapters in the Bible.

“There is value in reading the Bible both quickly and slowly. Reading quickly allows students to see major themes and illuminate textual connections. Reading slowly provides opportunity to think deeply on individual words and phrases,” said Jon Wood, Ph.D., vice president for student life and Christian ministries. “The Holy Spirit uses both, and we have intentionally built them into the experience.”

When asked about the importance of having a reading plan, Wood replied, “The whole essence is that God wrote this book so he might give himself to us. The words of the Bible are the divinely given communication from the creator of all things. It’s an incredible idea that God has revealed his heart and mind so to not seek him is a travesty. Reading his word allows us to experience his joy.”

The Bible reading plan started in August and will conclude prior to graduation in May 2019. Each year going forward, an updated schedule will be released to the incoming freshman class.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University is an accredited, Christ-centered, Baptist institution with an enrollment of 3,711 undergraduate, graduate and online students in more than 100 areas of study.
