Nursing Students Participate in Delivery Simulation

by Ryan Bower, Assistant Director of Public Relations

One of the most exciting times in a mother’s life is when a child is added to the family. Expectant mothers and their families rely on qualified professionals to care for and assist with the labor and delivery of their precious child.

Cedarville University’s School of Nursing is providing its students with a labor room and delivery experience through its high-fidelity Sim Mom located in the state-of-the-art Simulation Center. In this setting, students will deliver a simulated baby on Monday, Nov. 9, at noon.

In the simulated delivery, the students are will follow the mom, “Ginger,” through labor, including fetal heart monitoring, the safe delivery of the baby and placenta, newborn Apgar scoring and care and Ginger’s postpartum care.

The Simulation Center enables faculty to run life-like scenarios using the high-fidelity mannequins to give students training, practice and the opportunity to use their clinical judgement and reasoning in a realistic but safe environment.

Each of the simulators in the Sim Center can be programmed to respond to the student’s action or inaction. The students learn firsthand the importance of a thorough physical assessment and what the appropriate and safe action should be to provide the “patient” with the best quality of care.

“The classwork and clinical time that students receive comes alive in each scenario provided for them in the Simulation Center,” said Karen Callan, director of nursing laboratory programs and facilities. “Our qualified faculty strive to help students ‘pull it all together’ so that they receive the best education and clinical experience possible.”
