Operation Heart 5K Benefits Heart Monitor Fund

Encouraging heart-healthy living is the purpose of Operation Heart at Cedarville University. The program, directed by pharmacy doctorate students with Cedarville's chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), annually raises money for worthy causes in the region.

Money raised this year will go to the Cedarville Township Volunteer Fire Department’s heart monitor fund and to fund memberships for senior citizens to use the university’s fitness center.
Through a special 5K run on Cedarville University’s Elvin R. King Cross Country Course, APhA-ASP donated $300 to the fund.

“A few of us heard about the fire department’s fundraiser to purchase a new heart monitor, so we thought helping with the heart monitor fund would be a great way to help meet an immediate need in our community,” said Kristin Lessig, Operation Heart 5K chair and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) student.

The funds were given to former Cedarville Township Fire Chief Scott Baldwin and current Chief Kyle Miller on Monday, Oct. 17.

“Cedarville's School of Pharmacy is very passionate about training student pharmacists to be involved in their community,” said Lessig. “While there are courses and aspects of our curriculum that require a certain level of involvement, our professors have helped foster a sense of responsibility to our community.”

Danielle Baker, president of Cedarville’s APhA-ASP chapter, attests to the school of pharmacy’s focus on connecting students to the community.

“The school of pharmacy has a reputation for providing comprehensive health screenings, and we usually get invited to come back to places because our skills make a lasting impression,” said Baker.
