Three students from Cedarville University’s Student College of Clinical Pharmacy (SCCP) chapter advanced to the second round of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Research Challenge. The Cedarville team placed among the top 40 pharmacy schools in the nation – and they’re still competing.
Cedarville University’s team consists of Micah Bernard, a second-year professional pharmacy student from Houston, Texas; Sarah Berman, a first-year professional pharmacy student and SCCP president-elect from Mooresville, Indiana; and Megan Lawrence, a first-year professional pharmacy student from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The challenge, a three-round venture, began on February 6. In the second round, teams submitted a letter of intent for a research proposal that evaluated the value of transitions of care, or how health care providers transition patients from one level of health care need to another. The initial round consisted of answering questions on a recently published document about drug literature.
Advancing to the final round, to be announced Friday, March 17, would put Cedarville University among the top 20 pharmacy programs in the nation. Teams competing in the championship round will submit a complete research proposal, and the top three scores will be announced June 5 and present their research during a poster presentation at the 2017 ACCP annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
“Cedarville School of Pharmacy students have an advantage over other pharmacy schools because we are required to take a research course as part of our curriculum,” said Bernard. “The university has taught us how to conduct and evaluate whether research has been done well.”
Lawrence echoes the investment the university and its professors put into students.
“Our classes and professors have given us confidence in our research skills,” said Lawrence. “They’re good at providing us with feedback and resources to help direct our thoughts in the challenge.”
SCCP is a new student organization focusing on clinical pharmacy that empowers pharmacists to provide direct care to patients. SCCP provides networking opportunities and develops students as health care professionals.
“All three of us are passionate about clinical pharmacy and want to be able to impact our patients,” said Berman. “Through this challenge, we are better able to develop and discern the type of medical research that can provide the best patient care.”
