Allberry gives Cedarville lecture on body image and the Gospel

by Michaela Carpenter, Public Relations Writer

Gender identity. Body image. Eating disorders. The discussion of people’s physical bodies is a significant one today. On February 22, Sam Allberry, visiting professor at Cedarville University, will speak on “Why the Gospel Is Good News for Your Body.” The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. in room 104 of the Center for Biblical and Theological Studies.

Allberry is a global speaker for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries and an editor for The Gospel Coalition. He has authored several books, including “Is God Anti-Gay?,” “James for You” and “Why Bother with Church?”

The event, which includes both a lecture from Allberry and Q&A afterward, will focus on the Bible’s message about the human body, what the body means and why bodies matter. It is an interdisciplinary event, seeking to bring together faculty and students from different departments to discuss the topic.

“I hope it will be helpful for all of us as disciples to think about the ways in which the Bible casts discipleship in bodily terms,” said Allberry. “Just for all of us as Christians to think about the place of the body in our discipleship, to value our bodies because of what God says about our bodies and what they mean.”

Beyond this specific topic, Allberry hopes the lecture promotes deeper discussions on significant issues such as this one.

“I’m not pretending to have this all sewn up, so I’m looking forward to what I hope is the wider conversation it kicks off,” said Allberry. “And I hope it will, in some way, shape the culture here and how we encourage each other, support each other and at times even challenge each other.”
