School of Pharmacy faculty speak at Ohio Pharmacists Association meeting

by Alyssa Speicher, Public Relations Writer

Three Cedarville University faculty members will participate at the Ohio Pharmacists Association Midyear Meeting on November 5. The annual meeting draws professional pharmacists and pharmacy students from across the state to learn and network alongside peers.

This year’s meeting will focus on the Affordable Care Act’s push toward value-based care. The value-based care model bases practitioner reimbursement on how healthy patients become instead of how many times patients require care.

Dr. Marc Sweeney, dean of Cedarville’s school of pharmacy, will moderate a panel discussing how pharmacists can help practitioners keep patients healthier and deliver higher-quality care. Associate professor of pharmacy practice Dr. Melody Hartzler will join Sweeney on the panel.

“As educators from a school of pharmacy, we believe it is important to invest not only in our students, but in our colleagues as well,” said Sweeney.

Dr. Andrew Straw, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, will present current treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as they relate to the changes found in the 2017 Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines made last February.

“Cedarville faculty members are respected in the professional community and are invited to speak at this and many other conferences throughout the year,” Sweeney explained. “The fact that three of our faculty are speaking at the OPA meeting demonstrates that we want to be proactive in shaping the future of healthcare.”
