by Karina Brady, Student Public Relations Writer

This summer, Cedarville University will host high school students and incoming college freshmen for the first Molecular Biology Camp June 3-7. The $400 camp registration fee includes all meals, housing, activities, supplies and a T-shirt.

The camp, directed by Dr. Heather Kuruvilla, senior professor of biology and associate director of the Center for Bioethics, will introduce students to research in the areas of medicine, genetics and molecular biology.

During their five days on campus, the high schoolers will delve into a variety of activities in the lab and outdoors. They will investigate cancer cells, tumor suppressor genes, causes of autoimmunity, and genetic editing. The group will also take a field trip to Indian Mounds Reserve in Cedarville to search for medicinal plants.

Kuruvilla wants the campers to see “practical applications of molecular biology.” They will learn how to “use techniques and theory from molecular biology to restore the good that God designed in the cell that has been broken by the curse,” she said.

Registration is available at cedarville.edu/molecularbiocamp. Final deadline for registration is May 22.
