David Mills and Jose Sanchez recently received the Faculty and Staff Member of the Year awards for their service to Cedarville University. Both men were nominated by students and recognized by the Student Academic Advisory Board (SAAB) for their exceptional performance, Christlike example, and commitment to serving students.
Mills, a professor of philosophy, has taught at the University for 19 years and directed the honors program since 2000. He graduated from Cedarville in 1992 with a degree in mathematics and management information systems, then obtained his Masters of Philosophy and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
Mills also serves as the faculty advisor of the campus honors organization and frequently invites students to his home.
Justin Nichols, president of SAAB, said Mills is widely respected on campus as a scholar and instructor.
Another student said, “He has a contagious passion for pursuing God's truth in every area of life.”
Chris Miller, chair of the biblical and ministries studies department said Mills is known for his engaging teaching and ability to relate to students.
Miller also said Mills is committed to serving the poor in his community. “He regularly opened his home to those who needed help,” Miller said, “including those who were destitute or recovering from addictions.”
Sanchez, who received the Staff Member of the Year award, has served as a custodian on Cedarville’s maintenance staff for 10 years. He is also the pastor of Nueva Creación, a Hispanic church in Springfield.
Students said Sanchez has a profound influence on Cedarville’s campus through his passion for Christ, genuine faith and humble service.
“He is one of the most excellent servants of God,” one student said. “We are very blessed to have him as a member of our Cedarville family.”
