Tour the Online Learning Environment

Online courses at Cedarville are individually designed to provide you with the best learning experience. As an online student, you will use a web-based learning management system called CU Learn (Canvas). The sections below provide some of the basics of CU Learn (Canvas).

Logging in to CU Learn (Canvas) and Finding a Course

  1. From the Cedarville Student Homepage, click on the CU Learn (Canvas) link.  
    Note: The CU Learn (Canvas) link is typically on the right side of your computer or tablet screen. On your mobile phone, you may need to scroll down to find the CU Learn (Canvas) link near the bottom of your screen.
  2. On the CU Learn (Canvas) login page, enter your Cedarville login name and password to access your courses. After you log in, you will see a list of your current and past courses.
  3. Click the course name that you want to view to go to its CU Learn (Canvas) Course Page.

How Courses Are Structured

Online courses at Cedarville use CU Learn (Canvas). You will submit your assignments in CU Learn (Canvas) for the course professor to review and assess. CU Learn (Canvas) also provides you with access to the course content and assignment instructions, including the course syllabus. Key areas and links in your course include the following:

  • Information section – Located at the top of your course page, you will find basic class information, your professor’s name and contact information, and a link to the syllabus.
  • Modules/Units section – Located below the Information section, you will find the modules/units and the assignments that you will need to complete for each module/unit.
  • CU Learn (Canvas) Profile – Located at the top of your screen in the blue menu bar, click on your name and/or photo to access or update your CU Learn (Canvas) profile.
  • Grades – Located in the Administration section on the right (e.g., laptop or tablet) or the bottom (e.g., mobile phone) of your screen, click on the grades link to view your grades.

Review the Course Syllabus

The official course syllabus will be available for you in CU Learn (Canvas) before the official course start date.

  • All online courses have a preview period that begins at least one week before the course start date.
  • The preview period allows you to review the syllabus and acquire any additional resources before course activities are due.
  • The Campus Store provides course textbook information before the preview period and access to the course syllabus.

Your professor can answer specific questions about a course or provide navigation instructions for the course.

Take a Quiz

  1. From the CU Learn (Canvas) Course Page for your class, click on the quiz you want to take.
  2. Click on Attempt Quiz Now.
  3. If prompted, accept the time limit for the quiz, and then click Start Attempt.
  4. Select the answers to the questions to complete the quiz. If you are unsure of a question, click on Flag Question in the dark blue question label box to alert your professor.
  5. Click Next when you are done answering the questions.
  6. When you are completely finished with the quiz, click Submit All and Finish. CU Learn (Canvas) will warn you that you will not be able to change your answers after submitting your quiz. Click Submit All and Finish again. Depending on the settings your professor has assigned to the quiz, you may have a chance to review the quiz that you submitted, or you may be taken straight to the Quiz Summary page

Submit an Assignment

When you are finished with an assignment, submit it to your professor through CU Learn (Canvas).

On the Course Page, click on the assignment you want to submit. Depending on the type of assignment, you may need to type in text or upload a file.

  1. If you are entering a text submission, enter your assignment text and click Submit.
  2. If you are uploading a file, click Upload a File, and then click Choose File. Select your file from the list and click Save Changes. For some assignments, you will need to click Submit a final time.

Participate in a Forum Discussion

In some of your courses, you may be required to participate in discussions in CU Learn (Canvas). To post to a discussion:

  1. From the Course Page, click on the discussion you want to post to.
  2. Click on Add a New Discussion Topic.
  3. Enter you post; make sure to include a subject as well as the message.
  4. Click Post to Forum.

To read a post from a classmate or your professor:

  1. From the Course Page, click on the appropriate discussion.
  2. From the displayed table, click on the name of the discussion that you would like to read.
  3. After reading the post, click Reply to post a comment to the discussion.

Before Your Course Begins

At Least One Week:

  1. Verify your CU Learn (Canvas) access by logging in to CU Learn (Canvas).
  2. Complete or review the Getting Started in CU Learn (Canvas): Orientation for Students course.
  3. Complete any introductory activities outlined for the course.

Course Start Date:

  1. Read the welcome email from your course professor in your Cedarville Google Mail ( account.
  2. Access CU Learn (Canvas) and select your course from the course list.
  3. Review the following: course syllabus (near the top of the page) and assignments (in the assignment section of the syllabus).
  4. Complete any introductory activities outlined for the course.
