CNA Prepares for Community Blood Drive

by Public Relations Staff – February 10, 2016

Cedarville's chapter of the Christian Nurses Association will hold a blood drive Feb. 17-18.

Each year an estimated 15 million pints of blood are transfused in the United States that help save the lives of millions of people. On February 17 and 18, Cedarville University’s chapter of the Christian Nurses Association (CNA) will hold its semiannual blood drive from noon-4 p.m. in the Stevens Student Center event rooms.

According to information from America’s Blood Centers, just one pint of blood can save up to three lives, and every two seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. Last semester, the Cedarville CNA blood drive saw a record turnout, as more than 150 students donated blood.

“We want to support the community, and we have a lot of young, healthy people who can give blood,” said Sharon Christman, Ph.D., professor of nursing. “We have a large population of young people who are civic minded for the kingdom of God.”

Blood transfusions are often needed for women with complications during pregnancy, children with anemia, people with severe injuries as well as surgical and cancer patients.

“This is a great way for people to minister and serve who may not have other resources, such as money,” said Kristen Leaman, a junior nursing major from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who is helping organize the event.

Cedarville’s nursing students will play an active role in the event. In addition to planning the blood drive, the students will also be on hand to assist patients as they recuperate after donating. Donors are advised to rest for several minutes and enjoy a snack after the donation process in order to replace glucose and vitamins lost.

“This event gives our students the chance to interact with their campus community, as well as donation staff from outside Cedarville,” said Christman.

Donors are encouraged to reserve their time slot by using sponsor code 147 at donortime.com or by calling 1-800-388-4483. Walk-ins are welcome, but may experience a longer wait time.
