Schwartz Receives Prestigious Fulbright Scholarship

by Hannah Fair, Public Relations Writer – May 15, 2018

2018 graduate Stanley Schwartz is only the second Cedarville student to win the prestigious scholarship awarded by the U.S. Department of State.

Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has been awarding competitive, merit-based grants for international education-exchange to students and scholars. Cedarville University senior Stanley Schwartz was one of the five students awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Australia this fall.

Schwartz, from Noblesville, Indiana, is a senior double majoring in history and economics, with a concentration in political economy. He will conduct research at Australia National University for 10 months.

Schwartz’s research will focus on the Australian Labor Party between 1910 and 1925. He will study how the labor party discussed and decided whether or not to work with other parties in supporting World War I. They were the first ideologically Socialist political party in a major industrialized country to have majority political power.

Schwartz has previously conducted intensive research on socialism in the United Kingdom and the United States during the same era in history. He studied these topics at Oxford University in Oxford, England, during the summer of 2017 through the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. His goal is to gain a more holistic understanding of the labor party in these three countries during this era.

Dr. Thomas Mach, vice president for academics and chief academic officer, was Schwartz’s advisor and worked closely with him, along with the history and government department and financial aid office, to apply for the Fulbright Scholarship. Dr. Andrew Wiseman, professor of Spanish, director of international programs and Cedarville’s first Fulbright Scholarship grantee, also helped Schwartz with the application process.

“Graduate school has always been a goal of mine. This Fulbright Scholarship opens the door to graduate school,” said Schwartz. “It is a step on the road to ministry and a teaching career. Teaching is a passion and aspiration of mine, first in a secular institution and then in a Christian one, both as ministry outlets.

“Being awarded this scholarship was gratifying and meaningful as it gives me multiple career opportunities that I probably would not have otherwise. This has been and will be a real growth experience that is unparalleled, as it allows me to keep learning and honing my skills as a researcher.”
