Cedarville University's School of Pharmacy is exploring an international advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) rotation in Ghana for professional pharmacy students.

Dr. Samson Amos, chair and associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, will travel to Ghana on September 30 to explore the cultural experience.

Amos will begin initial discussions about creating an APPE rotation with physicians, pharmacists, pastors and leaders in the Adidome community. He will also connect with the Ghana representative for International Need, a mission organization serving people in Ghana.

“The need for quality health care delivery in Ghana is significant, and they invited us to partner with them to be a part of the solution,” said Amos.

Once the rotation is set, the Ghana APPE rotation will last one month. Cedarville students will conduct health screenings in the Adidome community, support the local hospital and pharmacy with educational events and educate the community about prescription and nonprescription drug use and misuse.

“The practice of pharmacy is very different in Ghana, so this rotation will help students appreciate the challenges, struggles and barriers that prevent excellent care for the patient,” noted Amos. “I believe that the knowledge gained through this program will prepare them to be global ambassadors for Christ, urging them to seek ways and avenues to reach the underserved communities of the world.”
