Nursing Students Administer Flu Vaccines to Classmates
Cedarville University’s junior and senior nursing students will gain valuable experience and serve their fellow nursing students by administering flu vaccines on October 29.
The shots will be offered October 29 in the clinic on the first floor of Cedarville’s Health Sciences Center (HSC).
Nursing faculty will supervise the students to ensure that they are using the proper techniques and consider medical conditions that would prevent people from receiving the shot.
The nursing students who receive these flu shots benefit too.
"All of our hospital sites mandate that all of our students have the flu shot,” said Rhonda Smith, compliance advisor for student success in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. “Our juniors and seniors get the practice, and all of our nursing students get the shot in a really easy way.”
The school of nursing will be working with Cedarville’s University Medical Services (UMS) to deliver these shots. UMS will provide the vaccines, syringes, gloves, alcohol pads and other supplies, and they will also take care of the billing.
“We just kind of run it like a doctor’s office,” Smith said. “It’s just great practice for our students, even working in a doctor’s office-like situation.”
In addition to flu vaccines, nursing students are required to receive tests for tuberculosis every year in order to serve in local hospitals. Cedarville’s junior and senior nursing students will offer these tests to other nursing students in April.
