Clear Web Browser Cache and Cookies

The browser cache stores logos, photographs, ads, and items from web pages that you visit. If you are having trouble with the display of a web page or with Internet speed, try clearing the browser's cache.

Cookies are messages that retrieve custom information when you visit the web page that cookie is from. For example, when you visit Amazon.com, a cookie might make your account name appear automatically. If you want to ensure the browser's cookies don't have any of your private information, delete the cookies.

Google Chrome

To clear the browser cache:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the [Customize and control] icon (three vertical dots) > Select "Settings."
  3. At the bottom of the page, click the "Show advanced settings..."
  4. From the “Privacy” section, click [Clear browsing data…] The "Clear Browsing Data" window should appear.
  5. Check “Cached images and files" and uncheck all other options.
  6. From the “Obliterate the following items from:,” drop-down, select how far back in time you want Chrome to clear the cache.
  7. Click [Clear browsing data].  The cache is cleared.

To clear the browser cookies: 

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the [Customize and control] icon (three vertical dots) > Select "Settings."
  3. At the bottom of the page, click the "Show advanced settings..."
  4. From the “Privacy” section, click [Clear browsing data…] The "Clear Browsing Data" window should appear.
  5. Check “Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data” and uncheck all other options.
  6. From the “Obliterate the following items from:,” drop-down, select how far back in time you want Chrome to clear the cookies.
  7. Click [Clear browsing data].  The cookies are cleared.

Safari

To clear the browser cache: 

  1. Open Safari.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click [Safari] > Select “Empty Cache.”
  3. Click [Empty]. The cache is cleared.

To clear the browser cookies: 

  1. Open Safari.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click [Safari] > Select “Preferences…”
  3. In the resulting window, click the [Privacy] tab. 
  4. Click [Remove All Website Data…] A confirmation window should appear.
  5. Click [Remove Now]. The cookies are cleared.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, 10, 11

To clear the browser cache: 

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click [Tools] > Select "Delete browsing history..." The "Delete Browsing History" window should appear.
  3. Check "Temporary Internet files and website files" and uncheck all other options. 
  4. Click [Delete]. The cache is cleared.

To clear the browser cookies: 

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click [Tools] > Select "Delete browsing history..." The "Delete Browsing History" window should appear.
  3. Check "Cookies and website data" (or "Cookies" for version 9) and uncheck all other options. 
  4. Click [Delete]. The cookies are cleared.

Mozilla Firefox

To clear the browser cache: 

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the [Menu] icon (3 horizontal lines) > Click [History] > Select “Clear Recent History…” (For the older version, click [Tools] > "Clear Recent History"). The "Clear Recent History" window should appear.
  3. Click the “Details” down arrow.
  4. Check “Cache” and uncheck all other options. 
  5. From the “Time range to clear:” drop-down, select how far back in time you want Firefox to clear the cache.
  6. Click [Clear Now]. The cache is cleared.

To clear the browser cookies: 

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the [Menu] icon (3 horizontal lines) > Click [History] > Select “Clear Recent History…” (For the older version, click [Tools] > "Clear Recent History"). The "Clear Recent History" window should appear.
  3. Click the “Details” down arrow.
