Convert Office 97 or 2003 Documents to Office 2007 or 2010 Documents

Before you start...

If you have an old Office 2003 Document and would like to use some of the new features of Office 2007 or 2010, you will need to convert the file to the new format.

Note:

Although Office 2007 and Office 2010 documents both have the same file extension (i.e., docx), you will not be able to use any of the new Office 2010 features on an Office 2007 document if you do not follow the instructions below.

Compatibility Mode

When you open your older documents in Office 2007 or 2010, they will open in "Compatibility Mode," as indicated by the words "Compatibility Mode" in the title bar beside the file name. This includes opening an Office 2007 document in Office 2010.

Office 2007:

Convert the File

  1. Click [Microsoft Office Button] Button image > “Convert” > [OK].
  2. Converting does not save the file. If the file does not convert properly, do not save it.
  3. To save the file, click the [Microsoft Office Button] > [Save As].
  4. The file name will now appear in the title bar with a ".docx" extension and without the "[Compatibility Mode]" designation.

Microsoft Word 2007

If the file does not convert properly in Microsoft Word 2007 with the above directions, try these steps:

  1. Click [Microsoft Office Button] Button image > Click [Save As].
  2. Click the "Save as type" drop-down arrow > Select "Word Document (*.docx)" > [Save].
  3. The document will now function as a Word 2007 document.

Note:

Manually saving the word document as a [.docx] file creates a brand new document. It will not replace the older [.doc] document on your harddrive. The same is not true with the [Convert] directions, however.

Office 2010:

Convert the File

  1. Click the "File" tab.
  2. Under the "Info" menu select the [Convert] button.
  3. Click [OK].

Microsoft Word 2010

If the file does not convert properly in Microsoft Word 2010 with the above directions, try these steps:

  1. Click the "File" tab > Click [Save As].
  2. Click the "Save as type" drop-down arrow > Select "Word Document (*.docx)" > [Save].
  3. The document will now function as a Word 2010 document.

Make Office 2007 or 2010 Documents compatible with Office 2003 or 97.
