Determine Associated Program from File Extension

Every file is made up of a file name followed by a file extension with a period "." connecting the two.  The file extension (i.e., .docx, .pdf, .mp3) indicates which program created and/or can open the associated file type.

A wonderful online resource exists to help you translate the file extension and thereby determine the associated program.

  1. Click on FilExt-The File Extension Source to access this resource.
  2. Type the file extension in the white text box.
  3. Click the [Submit Query] button.
