PowerPoint: Insert and Edit Video

In PowerPoint 2016 and 2010, you can insert a video file directly into your presentation. Once in the presentation, you can edit the video in a number of ways with the "Video Tools" tab. This function is not available in PowerPoint 2013 or versions prior to PowerPoint 2010.

Warning!

While you can insert almost any video type into your presentation, not all video types are compatible with some of the functions described below. If the video is not compatible, some of the options in the toolbar will be grayed-out; if you hover over these options, you will see a message that reads, "This command is not supported for this object."  

Insert a Video

  1. Click the "Insert" tab.
  2. In the "Media" group, click "Video" > "Video on My PC" or "Online Video."
  3. Choose a video > Click [Insert].

Insert a Video Bookmark

  1. Click to select video.
  2. The "Video Tools" tab will appear > Click the "Playback" tab.
  3. Locate the "Bookmarks" group.
  4. Play the video > Click "Add Bookmark" at the point where you wish to bookmark.
  5. Click on the bookmark (yellow dot) in either preview or fullscreen mode to go directly to the bookmark > Click the [Play] button.

Trim the Start and End of a Video

  1. Click to select video.
  2. The [Video Tools] tab will appear > Click [Playback] tab.
  3. Locate the "Editing" group > Select "Trim video."
  4. Move the green slidebar to a new start location.
  5. Move the red slidebar to a new end position > Click [OK].
  6. Replay trimmed video clip.
